(LIVESTREAM***) Today: Athletic vs Real Madrid live free 12/08/2023

This traditional Spanish football showdown is being played on the opening matchday for the first time since the 1963-64 edition, where the Whites defeated the Basques 3-1. Athletic Club form The Bilbao club missed out on qualification for the European cups, and this season, they will aim to regain the high level they displayed in previous years. In the last campaign, Athletic finished eighth with 51 points. Athletic Club has just won only two of their last 36 games against Real Madrid in LaLiga, suffering 28 defeats against the Merengues in those meetings. Real Madrid form Real Madrid starts its journey in the domestic tournament as one of the contenders to win the trophy. Last season, they finished as the runner-up with 78 points, trailing Barcelona, the league winner, by 10 points. This year, the Merengues are determined to claim the championship.

That roof has continued to be part of the project, but over time other elements have been added, including new commercial space, extra VIP and hospitality facilities, the futuristic ‘silver skin’ wrapped around the exterior of the building and a retractable pitch to allow for non-sporting events to be staged there, as another revenue stream. Regular planning and finance issues have caused delays and amendments, which led to much frustration over the years.

Each year since, the club’s accounts have shown substantial cash reserves, which many assumed was money to spend on Mbappe if he became available. So – whether intentional or not – Mbappe staying on in Paris has helped Madrid’s finances to continuously look very healthy. Will the Bernabeu project impact Madrid’s future transfer plans? Madrid have always claimed that the finances involved in the stadium rebuild were completely separate from their first-team planning and transfer spending.

That looked like an excellent deal, especially when Covid-19 hit in early 2020 and interest rates rose significantly. Madrid were also able to take advantage of the pandemic to move games to a stadium within the grounds of their training complex and so accelerate work on the Bernabeu. However, it soon became clear that more than that €575million was going to be required to finish the project, especially given the need to build a big underground space to store the pitch so the playing-surface area could be used for events on days when games were not being played.

So, in November 2021, the club borrowed another €225million, over 27 years, and again at a very attractive interest rate — 1. 53 per cent. Madrid still needed more money to keep moving forward, though, especially as the pandemic was also affecting the club’s day-to-day finances, with their accounts saying the pandemic cost them €400million in lost revenues. The Madrid hierarchy therefore organised two extra sources of funding, which are designed to tide them over until the new stadium is finally completed.

The first saw the club return to a deal first agreed with the U. S. private equity group Providence in 2017, when they received €200million in exchange for paying out a share of future sponsorship revenues, which at the time was presumed to include the sale of naming rights to the revamped stadium. In 2021 that deal was renegotiated, with another €50m provided, and it now runs until 2027. The second was the May 2022 deal with U. investor Sixth Street and stadium-management specialist Legends. This provided €360million which could be spent on any club activity.

Instead, the argument was that the extra revenues generated by the ultra-modern venue once complete and fully operational would increase the amount available to spend on new players. “The new stadium will bring in an extra €150million per season, ” Perez predicted in 2018. The expectation now is that the agreement with Legends will help the club add substantially more than that to their annual revenues through matchday income from games and also other uses of the stadium all through the year.

Recent summers have also seen older players, such as Casemiro and Raphael Varane, leave with youngsters arriving, like Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, on significantly lower wages, meaning the salary costs have remained under control. So, all this time, Madrid were preparing to sign Mbappe? Everyone at the Bernabeu knows that landing Mbappe has long been a personal objective of Perez, going back to when Madrid first attempted to sign him from Monaco in the summer of 2017 and he ended up at PSG instead.
